DJ-1800 and Leopard

Using DJ-1800 on Mac OS 10.5 ("Leopard")
We have had reports of an audio problem when using DJ-1800 v3 on Leopard.

We have narrowed the problem down to a very specific set of circumstances, which the majority of users should never encounter. These circumstances are described below.

This page provides information about the problem, and how to avoid it. If you are unsure as to whether this will affect you, please read the information below.

The problem
Starting playback of a second track may cause a short audio dropout on an already-playing track.

What is the cause of the problem?
This problem is caused by a bug in Leopard and QuickTime 7, rather than a bug in DJ-1800. We are working with Apple to help them fix this problem.

When does this problem occur?
This problem only occurs if:
  • You are using Mac OS 10.5 ("Leopard")
  • You are using DJ-1800 v3
  • Pitch Lock is turned on in DJ-1800
  • The internal (on-screen) mixer is being used (output modes "Mono + Mixer" or "Dual + Mixer")
  • The same output device is being used for both the Live and Headphones output
    • This is always the case for "Mono + Mixer" mode
    • This will only be true for "Dual + Mixer" mode if you don't have a second audio device for your headphones

I use DJ-1800 v2.2.2. Will I experience this problem?
No. This problem only affects DJ-1800 v3, in a very specific set of circumstances, described above.

I use DJ-1800 v3.0.2 on Mac OS 10.4 ("Tiger"). Will I experience this problem?
No. This problem only occurs on Mac OS 10.5 ("Leopard").

I don't use DJ-1800's on-screen mixer. Will I experience this problem?
No. This problem only occurs when using DJ-1800's on-screen mixer in the "Mono + Mixer" or "Dual + Mixer" modes, and even then only in certain circumstances, as described above.

I don't use Pitch Lock in DJ-1800 v3. Will I experience this problem?
No. This problem only occurs when Pitch Lock is turned on, and even then only in certain circumstances, described above.

I use the "Dual + Mixer" mode, and I play my Live audio through a different audio device to my Headphones audio. Will I experience this problem?
No. If you use a different audio device for Live and Headphones, then you will not experience this problem.

For example: if you use a MacBook laptop to DJ, you might plug your headphones into the MacBook's headphones socket, to listen to a new track before playing it live. You might then use an external audio device - such as a Griffin iMic - to play your live audio to an amplifier. In this setup, you would not experience the problem described above.

I use the "Dual + Mixer" mode, and I play my Live audio and Headphones audio through the same device. Will I experience this problem?
Yes. If you play Live and Headphones through the same device - even if you use different channels on that device - then you will experience this problem. (But only if you are on Leopard, using DJ-1800 v3, with Pitch Lock turned on.)

For example: you might use a GigaPort AG, which has 8 mono output channels. You might use channels 1+2 on the Gigaport for your live output, routed to an amplifier. You might then use channels 3+4 on the Gigaport for your headphones. In this scenario, you would experience the problem described above.

To work around this problem, you can either:

  • Turn off Pitch Lock in DJ-1800's "General Preferences" window.
...or...
  • Use a different audio device for Live and Headphones - for example, by using your Mac's built-in headphones output for your headphones instead.

I use the "Mono + Mixer" mode to practice DJing in mono without using an external audio device. Will I experience this problem?
Yes - if you use Mac OS 10.5, DJ-1800 v3, and have Pitch Lock turned on.

We are hoping to be able to work around this problem in DJ-1800 v3.1 in the near future.

In the meantime, to work around this problem, you can simply turn off Pitch Lock in DJ-1800's "General Preferences" window.

Alternatively, you may want to invest in a separate audio device such as a Griffin iMic, and switch to using DJ-1800's "Dual + Mixer" mode. This enables you to DJ in stereo whilst also cueing up tracks in your headphones in stereo.

For more information on supported external audio devices, see our Audio Hardware page.
